Yes yes, I know what you’re thinking.

In between all these parties, the shopping, the wrapping, the eating, the sleeping, the singing and even more eating, WHO has the time to read at Christmas???

I hear ya. But I’ve gotta say, now I’m A Celeb is over, I do feel like I might at least start to get my evenings back and there is nothing, repeat nothing, I love more than a good book.

So with that in mind, I am fully intending to get absorbed by words this Christmas and try to carve out time, even where there isn’t any, to turn my mind off, slow it down and fall in love with reading again.

After all, isn’t that why there are five days between Christmas and New Year? To give us the chance to relax and do things that we aren’t normally permitted to do during the rest of the working year. Yes, that’s exactly the reason.

I’ve read some great books this year, not as many as I’d like, since, you know, I was publishing one, (hello humble brag), but I’ve still got through enough to pull together a fairly fabulous recommendation list.

If you’ve seen any of these on a list here before, it’s because they were so great I’ve either re-read them or plan on doing that over Christmas.

Your December challenge, from me, is to at least try and read one book. Use the ten minutes before bed, normally spent Insta-stalking to read and chill and love some of the amazing art that people have been kind enough to create for our enjoyment!

Happy choosing…

(PS. I have a real interest in modern history, so that’s what the war books are about!)

And because I am a total wanker…

Your recommendations make me really feel like challenging myself and go back to reading – I was devouring books since I was a kid all the way through college (yet the only books I’ve read from your list are "Remains of the Day", 4 Harry Potters and your book, of course) and in the recent years I just stopped, which is utterly embarrasing. Side note, on the topic of your book (kind of): in your newsletter, it says that "your book in July". Do I get a reward for reading everything very carefully or am I just an asshole?

A great list thank you. I read Bryony’s column in the Telegraph but have never read her books. Thanks to you I will start with the ‘knickers’!
