UPDATE: Dani Mathers, the Playboy Model who made headlines in the summer for being a total body-shaming arsehole (sorry not sorry) has now been charged by Los Angeles police for ‘invasion of privacy’, after she took a photo of a naked woman in a gym changing room and uploaded it to Snapchat. If convicted she could face up to six months in jail and a $1000 fine.
Los Angeles City Attorney Mike Feuer said in a statement:
‘Body shaming is humiliating, with often painful, long-term consequences. It mocks and stigmatizes its victims, tearing down self-respect and perpetuating the harmful idea that our unique physical appearances should be compared to air-brushed notions of “perfect.” What really matters is our character and humanity. While body-shaming, in itself, is not a crime, there are circumstances in which invading one’s privacy to accomplish it can be. And we shouldn’t tolerate that.’
Preach it Mike.
You may remember back in July when Playboy Model, 29 year old Dani Mathers uploaded a photo of a naked stranger to her Snapchat Story with the caption: ‘if I can’t unsee this then you can’t either’, in the worst case of body shaming that I can remember, well for it once it seems this is not one of those things that is just going to be forgotten about.
Because although she claimed afterwards that uploading that image to her story was an accident (that the image was only intended for one friend) and she went on to make a huge public pathetic excuse of an apology across her social media channels, I am very pleased to announce that she IS to be reprimanded for this.
She was initially placed under investigation following the upload of the image and now the LAPD have reportedly tracked down the woman from the picture (who I actually hoped would never have to see this), who is in her 70s and will recommend that prosecutors charge her for dissemination of private images, carrying a sentence of up to six months in jail. TMZ actually reported that the woman in the pictures wants Mathers to feel the full force of the law for what she did. *ME TOO!*
She’s already been suspended indefinitely from a longtime radio show gig on the Heidi and Frank Show on Los Angeles’s 95.5 KLOS and was also banned from all LA Fitness gyms for “egregiously violating a member’s right of privacy by taking a pic of her while naked in the shower”, although despite all of this, her Playmate Of The Year 2015 title still remains in tact.
It’s now up to the LA City Attorney to decide as to whether or not they will proceed with this case, but for the sake of body positivity, confidence and basic humanity as a whole, I really hope that they do. Because no one, NO ONE, has the right to treat anyone as badly as Dani Mathers treated this particular woman.
What kind of a role model does something like this? And what kind of a society are we if we let this slide without removing Dani from the position of power that she holds? The last thing this world needs is people like her showing others that it is ok to body shame, and that you can get away with it. Because it isn’t. That poor woman was in her 70s, kicking ass by being in the gym in the first place, before some dickhead came and shamed the living shit out of her, simply for cleaning herself after a stint of hard work. Is that fair? To make a whole new generation afraid to go into the gym for fear of judgement, not just from those in there, but from the entirety of social media? No. Not even a little bit.
